Bel Oiseau

Ski touring in November is always a win. For us young ones, consistent skiing in November hasn’t really been a feature in our winter seasons so anything we do ski is always a bonus.

With no lifts running until December, we had no choice but to continue our fine November ski touring tradition involving cold, early and un-motivated starts with a trip up to the Bel Oiseau peak near the Emosson Dam.

A 1200m ascent in search of untouched snow from last weeks’ snowfall.

I dragged myself out of bed at 6:10, ate breakfast quietly and packed the car. Why are we doing this?

Leaving the house at 7am we drove 40minutes to La Lechere, a tiny Swiss settlement with more goats than houses. From here we hiked along a narrow steep trail through the forest and up towards the snow line.

We reached the col making good work of the 1200m ascent. Our reward was cheese and almonds whilst gazing out at this 360 degree view. It’s the simple things in life, etc. etc.

We decided to ski a little couloir that hadn’t been touched yet and it made for another great November ski day.
